A large polychrome brightly colored ceramic sculpture depicting a seated and cross-legged woman resting her elbow on her knee and chin on her left hand by famed French ceramicist Roger Capron. Signed “R. Capron” on fleshy part of the left buttocks. Provenance: Acquired from the estate of a former CEO of a Fortune 500 listed company. Roger Capron sculptures are being offered on other platforms for prices ranging from $20,000 to over $150,000.
Roger Capron is an internationally acclaimed French ceramic artists who worked in a variety of styles in the mid- to late-20th century and earned worldwide reclaim as one of the leading ceramicists of his era.
Capron established his studio in the storied pottery town of Vallauris, France in 1946. He interacted with and was influenced by Pablo Picasso, who arrived a year later to develop his own ceramics. Capron’s early work is characterized by undulating forms with bright colors and whimsical touches. His colorful, vivid and spontaneous art clearly displays Picasso’s influence. He later moved closer to mid-century modernism with colorful, simple and functional forms. The New York Times hailed Capron as “one of the most successful and valuable Artists of European design in the post-war period.” He won many prizes and died is 2006, leaving behind a sizable body of works which are collected worldwide.
