The mortise and tenon … more Made of northern Chinese Elmwood, the table is a prime example of traditional "country" Chinese craftsmanship. The mortise and tenon joinery lend the piece an undeniable strength and integrity. For centuries this type of low, long table, often called a kang table, was used for serving up wine, eating, meditation, playing games, and sleeping. Guests would sit or recline on a platform pulled along the table or sit on the floor.

The front of the table is detailed with a more ornate apron including a hand-carved leafy pattern surrounding "dragon eyes" and slightly hoofed legs. The back has a much simpler apron and stretcher with straight legs. Each side has a stretcher adding support for the table. The front apron and leafy hand-carved section around the "dragon eyes" was painted red, black and gold - most of this paint is still visible. The paint or lacquer on the front legs and the mitered corners of the top is quite worn. The piece may have originally been placed along a wall with the front being the focus. The worn lacquer on the legs can be explained that in the old days these pieces sat directly on a stone or dirt floor. The accumulation of humidity and moistness from the floor along with the ages of sweeping and general use will leave wear marks on the legs, sometimes appearing like watermarks. This helps to authenticate the age as this factor is difficult to reproduce. Given this piece is over 100+ years old and has traveled across an ocean, it is in great shape.

The piece was purchased from a dealer in Waltham MA five years ago. It has been used in several of our homes - great for a suburban home, factory loft or a coastal home. So many options! less
