This rare 18ct yellow gold open dial pocket watch, made in London in 1881, is a remarkable antique timepiece crafted by Leon Allamand for F. Basse Adelaide. The case is stamped “18”, “F”, “LA”, with a crown and leopard’s head hallmark, denoting 18ct gold and London assay.
The watch features a white porcelain dial with black Roman numerals, anodised blue spade hands, and a subsidiary seconds hand at the 6 o’clock position. The movement is marked “F BASSE ADELAIDE” and is stem wound with pin set functionality.
The case back is finely engraved: “PRESENTED TO S. von Bertouch Esq by his Friends Tanunda 27 July 1885” in a combination of block, gothic, and cursive styles. Measuring 51mm x 13.8mm, this substantial piece weighs 80.9 grams and remains in working order with signs of wear consistent with its age.
