This “rustique” French two handled antique pitcher would have been used for transporting and storing “eau de vie” water of life.
This pitcher would have originated in the South West of France near the famous “Prune de Agenais” town of Agen.
It would have dated back to the early 19th century if not before.

Plums are grown in this area to be eventually dried to produce the famous “Pruneau d´Agen”, the surplus plums are fermented and then distilled to eventually produce what is known in that area as
“l´eau de vie de prune”.

This is a charming piece, its condition is remarkably fine with very few marks for a piece of household pottery over 100 years old.
These stoneware vessels were once used daily in French country farmhouse kitchens.

This pitcher is sturdy and stylish will blend into any style of home.
What a conversation piece.
