Antique Gilt Bronze Vajrasattva (Dorje Sempa) Statue – 9” – 19th Century Tibetan Buddhist Art
This gilt bronze sculpture of Vajrasattva (Dorje Sempa) stands as a striking testament to the sublime craftsmanship and profound spiritual symbolism of Tibetan Buddhist art. Dating back to the 19th century, this antique piece was handcrafted in Nepal or Tibet using the traditional lost-wax casting technique, and remains in remarkably good condition, retaining its original gilded finish and natural patina. However, there is one indentation on the back of the Buddha on the pedestal part.
Given the presence of the incised seal on the bottom Tibet symbol this dates to 19th/20th Century, this statue was likely created for religious practices for a temple. When such figures are consecrated, the image is first purified in order to be deemed suitable for the inhabitance of Buddha or another revered entity.. Then the statue is invested with the presence and power of that deity.

Design & Iconography:
Vajrasattva is depicted in a dhyana asana (meditative lotus posture), seated atop a beautifully rendered single lotus throne that is intricately incised with Tibetan treasures and supported by a slightly raised pedestal.
In his right hand, he holds a vajra (thunderbolt) at his heart—a symbol of the active, compassionate principle.
In his left hand, resting on his hip, he holds the ghanta (ritual bell)—representing wisdom and the feminine principle. Together, these attributes signify the union of wisdom and method that conquers ignorance and duality.
He is adorned with a flowing dhoti and shawl, as well as layers of necklaces and ornaments across his chest.
His serene countenance, with a gentle downward gaze and reassuring smile, reflects deep inner peace and meditative clarity.
His head features a seven-leaf crown, and another small crown is delicately set upon his chignon (topknot), emphasizing his transcendent, sambhogakaya form.
Flowing ribbons of his robe add dynamic movement and ceremonial beauty to the sculpture.
Cultural and Spiritual Context:
Vajrasattva (Tibetan: Dorje Sempa) is revered in Vajrayana Buddhism as the embodiment of purity and spiritual purification. He is often invoked in tantric practices to cleanse karma and defilements. This statue, with its Tibetan inscription on the underside and cross-shaped maker’s mark, may have originally served as a ritual object in a monastery or temple and is constructed to be ritually fillable from below, consistent with Tibetan tradition.
Craftsmanship & Condition:
This piece is a superb example of high Himalayan craftsmanship, with meticulous attention to fine engraving, lifelike modeling, and balanced proportions.
The gilding remains lustrous and intact in most areas.
All features—including the facial expression, ornaments, and symbolic implements—are preserved in good, original condition, with no modern restorations or alterations.
The statue’s aged patina speaks to its authentic antiquity and enhances its aesthetic and spiritual value.
