Origin: Tibetan Buddhist Art | Imperial Chinese Workshop
This antique gilt bronze Green Tara is a masterful representation of sacred Tibetan Buddhist art, dating to the Ming Dynasty, Yongle period marked (1403–1424). Cast using the traditional lost-wax method and exquisitely gilded, the statue reflects the refined aesthetics and spiritual gravitas of early 15th-century imperial commissions. Dates: From 18th/19th Century
Key Features
Given the presence of the incised seal on the bottom Tibet symbol this dates from the 18th/19th Century; this statue was likely created for religious practices in a temple. When such figures are consecrated, the image is first purified in order to be deemed suitable for the inhabitance of Buddha or another revered entity.. Then the statue is invested with the presence and power of that deity.
Material & Finish
Expertly crafted in solid bronze and finished with rich gilding, the statue has developed an authentic, time-worn patina that adds depth to its spiritual and historical character. Minor surface wear consistent with age is present, but the original surface remains largely intact and luminous.

Design & Iconography
Green Tara is depicted in dhyana asana (meditative lotus posture), seated gracefully atop a single-lotus pedestal finely engraved with auspicious Tibetan symbols. A Yongle-period imperial mark is inscribed on the front of the base.
Her right hand is extended in varada mudra (gesture of generosity), while the left displays abhaya or vitarka mudra (protection or teaching), each reinforcing her compassionate and protective essence.
She is adorned in a flowing dhoti and shawl, ornate necklaces, armlets, and anklets, embodying the traditional attributes of a bodhisattva. Her five-leaf crown, refined facial expression, and symbolic implements—like the utpala lotus—convey her enlightened, sambhogakaya form. Flowing sashes and finely chased folds of her garments lend grace and movement to the figure.
Cultural & Spiritual Significance
Green Tara is revered as the embodiment of enlightened activity and maternal compassion. Known as the “Mother of All Buddhas,” she protects devotees from fear and obstacles on the path to enlightenment. The presence of Tibetan inscriptions on the base and a cross-shaped ritual plug indicate the statue’s likely original use in a temple or monastery. It was ritually consecrated and designed to be filled from below, consistent with Tibetan Buddhist practice.
Craftsmanship & Condition
A testament to early Ming-Himalayan court patronage, this statue reflects the elite artistry of the Yongle imperial workshops—renowned for their faultless casting, elegant proportions, and luxurious gilding. The detailing remains sharp and expressive, with no modern repairs or restorations. There is one small indentation on the back. Its natural patina enhances both visual appeal and spiritual resonance.
