English Medieval Extremely Rare Church Pew Animal Carvings
Pair of extraordinary animal carvings from the 15th century. A cat playing with a mouse and a dog with a bat wing in its paw. In medieval art animals carried a rich symbolic association often drawn from the Bible. These carvings were part of a broader medieval fascination with animals and their symbolic meaning. They are often found in churches on various objects. This pair served as armrests on choir pew ends. Many 15th century English churches are still in service with all the original interior present. This explains the rarity of such carvings available. They can be found in museums across the U.K. and only a few made it into the trade. This pair is in good antique condition. Wear commensurate with about 500+ years of age and use. Exceptional colour and patination.
