19th Century Kerala Nettur Petti - Traditional Indian Dowry Box
The top and sides of the box look like rosewood, I believe the bottom is oak.
Thick, beautiful traditional Indian ornate brass adorns the top, sides, joints, locks, etc.
The amount of still shiny, thick and intact brass on this box exceeds many other similar
boxes that I viewed that have sold before listing this. One unique feature of this one is the brass vaulting in the pyramid shaped lid on the underside.of the lid. See picture #8.
This antique is still a stunning dowry/ jewelry/ riches box that you could proudly display in your home in many places.
This is estimated to be about 140 years old, so the condition is quite good considering its age. It is not blemish free, however. There is a thin split on the left bottom panel, a few brass screws are missing and someone in history tried to fill in 2 loops of brass with some sort of solder or wax. I am not going to try and pick anything out- it is only in one or 2 spots. The bottom split does not affect performance and the bottom panel stays in place. The brass handle still works and can hold the weight of the Nettur Petti dowry box. There is some denting in the handle. There is a key that comes with this, but I cannot get it to lock the outer lock or the inner compartment lock. The inner compartment box lid works great. All hinges- the main lid hinges and the compartment box hinges are secure and working properly.
This is an authentic and full size Kerala dowry box.
