Midcentury amazing rare sculpture ‘Onorevoli’ series in terracotta by Aldo Londi (1911-2003) for Bitossi. Made in Italy in the 1960s. Natural terracotta, unglazed and incised with abstract linear details. The “Onorevoli” series by Aldo Londi for Bitossi is one of the most original and ironic collections of Italian ceramic production after the Second World War, created in the 1960s and 1970s. of the series: The sculptures represent stylized human figures, called “honorable” in a satirical tone: probably an ironic reference to the ruling class or Italian politicians of the time. The shapes are totemic, essential, with round heads, cylindrical bodies and features reduced to a minimum (often only eyes and a line for a mouth or nose). Despite the simplicity, each figure has a distinct personality, as if they were abstract portraits. The style recalls both primitive art and the sculptural modernism of artists such as Brancusi or Arp. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
