Schurig was the son of the artist and illustrator Karl Wilhelm Schurig (1818–1874).This drawing was done when Felix Schurig was relatively young, aged twenty-five. The inscription indicates that it is addressed to a Miss Alliston, who is believed to be Florence Alliston (1855–1886), daughter of Sir Frederick Prat Alliston (1832–1912), Alderman of the City of London. The family lived at The Ferns, 28 Copers Cope Rd, Beckenham. There is record that Florence died in a house fire in 1886 in Eastbourne, Sussex. This pretty watercolour is a decorative and feminine image that presumably the artist thought would appeal to its young recipient. Schurig was highly skilled at painting sensuous female subjects, such as his Woman Combing Hair in the National Museum in Warsaw. In graphite and watercolour on card. The card has been cut to shape and laid down on laid backing paper with East Malling (Kent) watermark. All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography.
