This copy is unique in that it dates back to the author’s lifetime. In Memoriam is Lord Alfred Tennyson’s tribute to his friend Arthur Henry Hallam who died at the age of 22, written over a period of 17 years, a period of profound, life-altering grief for Tennyson. In this work, Tennyson wrote the line, “'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”On the inside cover there is a bookplate, from Cheshunt College, the oldest of the Cambridge theological colleges, which used the motto "In Veritate Victoria" meaning "In Truth is Victory.” The bookplate also includes "A. Clifford Hall," referring to the student to whom the book was given like as a prize for academic achievement. Lovely personal, leather-bound edition with raised bands and gilt detailing.
