Metal repoussé
Incised signature to lower center
This vintage hammered metal art is called a repoussé or repoussage. It is named for the metalworking technique in which the artist shapes malleable metal by "chasing" (hammering from the front side) and repousse' (hammering from the reverse side). This particular piece offers a mix of high-relief design and fine detail work such as peening.
The large stylized figure with smaller figure in the background suggests perhaps these are dancers. The piece is in very good original condition, with nice unmolested patina on its front. Some tarnish, markings likely in the making, and remnants from previous mounting on back. Signed (incised) by the artist, we believe the piece to be solid brass, but could be a light bronze. It has a rather freeform character, and although could be wall art we feel it would be best displayed on a small easel or plate stand. An exceptional example of Vanzelli's efforts, and unique in that he most often worked in decorative castings and bowl-shapes.
About Renato Vanzelli:
A graduate and later professor of the Pietro Selvatico State Art Institute, Vanzelli focused on drawing and developing craft techniques to create artistic languages on metals. In the 1960s, he began an operational process that led him to create modular forms and structures. He participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Biennale Giovanile in Gorizia and the Mostra d'Arte Giovanile in Rome in 1954, the Biennale del Metallo in Gubbio in 1964, and the IX Concorso Internazionale del Bronzetto in Padua in 1973.
His first personal exhibition was held at La Chiocciola Gallery in Padua in 1976. In addition to works made of bronze, steel, and lead, his exhibitions have featured drawings on paper and casts in wood and wax.
