Mid-century modern portrait art collectors, this rare 1958 signed expressive drawing by California artist Jerry Campbell is a stunning example of abstract figurative minimalism from the post-war modernist movement. Combining delicate graphite linework with bold, painterly strokes of cream-white paint, the work balances control and spontaneity—a hallmark of American abstract expressionism.
Rendered on board with exposed brown undertones, the contrast between the light impasto-like paint and the fine pencil detail adds a raw, emotional intensity. The piece is believed to be a self-portrait and carries a compelling presence, both introspective and gestural.
Signed “Jerry Campbell” and dated 1958, this work predates his MFA from Otis Art Institute and reflects early influences shaped by the West Coast art scene of the 1950s. Campbell would later go on to work as an exhibit designer for the L.A. County Museum of Natural History and contribute to numerous historical displays in Southern California.
