The front is characterised by a hinged door with a painting in the centre depicting a love scene, embellishing the sides are two fluted columns ending with gorinzi capitals in gilded bronze. The built-in top is in white statuary marble, the key is original from the period. The under-top band is adorned with a gilded bronze fitting with a marie antoinette knuckle in the centre. Vernis martin: the technique was developed in 1728 by the martin brothers who held the monopoly for twenty years. It was applied in overlapping layers, then left to dry and then painted with landscapes, figures and genre scenes. The decorations on the vernis martin were entrusted to skilled painters. The fashion for vernis martin continued into the 19th century and the lacquered and painted furniture became one of the characteristics of the napoleon iii style.
