Lazarus & Cie manufacturer in Calcutta. This refined and functional piece features a mail organizer upholstered in sumptuous green satin velvet on the upper section. Just below, four arched niches combine architectural finesse and practicality. The writing desk section features a drop-leaf cover upholstered in black leather with a gold vignette. It reveals six storage compartments, perfect for elegantly organizing documents and accessories. The lower section opens with a leaf held by chains. The sides and back of the piece are enhanced by large niches upholstered in satin velvet. Finally, this small piece rests on square-section legs with bronze sabots. This Bonheur du Jour is an exceptional piece of furniture, both for its rarity and the quality of its craftsmanship.

C. Lazarus & Cie: Charles Lazarus was born in Wales in 1823 and joined his brother Benjamin in Calcutta in 1838. Together, they established a carpentry business staffed by talented craftsmen that enjoyed great success in the mid-19th century. Their company prospered, particularly after the acquisition of Shearwood & Co., which specialized in billiard tables. Charles Lazarus died in 1881, leaving a thriving business continued by his sons, who changed their surname to Lamour but retained the C. Lazarus & Cie brand for its reputation.
