In the traditional Swedish folk dress of the period, the characters depict the biblical story of Jesus and the Canaanite woman in Matthew, chapter 15. It reads: Om den cannaneiska kvinnan Matt 15. Translation: regarding the Canaanite woman, Matthew Chapter 15. This primitive and exuberantly colored bonad mural is circa 1830 and is hand painted on paper. It was laid down on canvas in the early 20th-Century.. It has been framed in archival materials in a modern, glazed champagne color frame.
These vibrant decorations were displayed in Swedish homes during the Christmas season and other holidays. They are very rare and difficult to find outside Scandinavia. Recently declared a Swedish national treasure, the export of rare bonads is now prohibited. See less
