French Antique Armoire Bonnet Top in Chevron and Oyster Pattern Cherrywood early 1800’s The French would refer to this armoire as in the style of “chapeau de gendarme crown”. Defined by the “bonnet top crown” and is highly preferred in lieu of the more common flat top. However, what really sets our Antique French Armoire apart, are the Chevron Pattern doors coupled with the Oyster Cherry wood detailing above and below the doors. Only the highest quality French Armoires would be adorned with such incredible veneer work. The hardware is beautifully constructed from solid brass and has a wonderful all original patina to it and yes, even the door key functions. We were lucky enough to be able to repurchase this Antique French Cherrywood Armoire after not seeing it for decades. The previous owners who we sold it to kept it in their living room and fortunately never installed any electronic devices, so there are no unsightly holes drilled in the cabinet. Truth be told, it looks exactly how we sold it almost 30-years ago and we virtually only had to dust it and apply a light coat of beeswax. The Armoire was made in the late 1700’s or early 1800’s and shows little in the way of previous restoration, rather we would guess it enjoyed a privileged life. We described our Antique French Cherrywood armoire as of course being constructed from Cherry, but as is typical in France the sides inset panels are made from Chestnut and this was a fairly common practice. This is one of the nicer French Armoires we have had in quite some time and it’s easy to forget what a really good one looks like. France, 1780-1820.
