This 1966 signed wood sculpture exemplifies Bezalel's mid-century modernist aesthetic. Measuring 6x7x49 inches (84 inches with the pedestal), the piece showcases his skill in creating elongated, abstract human forms that evoke a sense of community and spiritual connection. The sculpture's verticality and stylized figures are reminiscent of his bronze work titled “That all men have one common nature,” housed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Born in 1926 in Herat, Afghanistan, Aharon Bezalel immigrated to Israel at a young age. His early experiences as a silversmith and craftsman deeply influenced his artistic journey. Studying under sculptor Zev Ben-Zvi, Bezalel absorbed both classic and modernist art concepts, which he interpreted through the lens of ancient Hebrew sources. He resided and worked in Jerusalem, teaching art for many years.
Bezalel's sculptures often explore themes of unity and multiplicity, drawing inspiration from Canaanite art and Kabbalistic teachings. His work is characterized by symbolic figures and abstract forms, reflecting a deep connection to his cultural heritage.
Bezalel's contributions to art have been recognized internationally. His works are part of prestigious collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
This sculpture not only represents Bezalel's artistic prowess but also serves as a testament to his unique ability to blend cultural narratives into compelling visual forms.
