This elegant pair of vintage mid-20th century Chinese rubbings showcases tomb relief imagery of a Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) scholar-astronomer and a warrior-general — both typical of Han funerary iconography — each meticulously hand-finished using traditional techniques and drawn from classical stone carvings.
Executed on handmade xuan paper, the works reveal desirable natural fibers and warm tonal variation — hallmarks of genuine artisan-crafted paper. Hand-applied black ink and delicate gold gilt detailing bring dimension and subtle texture, reflecting the tactile quality of true hand-rubbing craftsmanship.
Both works feature hand-brushed Chinese calligraphy and traditional red seals — likely a name seal and a studio seal — underscoring their authenticity and suggesting they were produced by a skilled hand within a professional workshop, possibly referencing Quan Shi Zhai, a known studio associated with fine Chinese rubbings.
Each piece is mounted in a modern black frame with subtle moiré matting that adds depth and shimmer without distracting from the artwork. The frame is crowned with a finial in a traditional Chinese fretwork design — a geometric motif echoing ancient architectural ornamentation and symbolizing harmony and unity. Rich with historical resonance and visual refinement, these framed works offer cultural substance alongside strong decorative appeal.
Equally suited to refined interiors and discerning collections, these framed rubbings offer a harmonious balance of cultural depth and visual elegance.
Dimensions (Framed): 18” W x 1” D x 22.5” H

Note from Seller:
Unlike widely available decorative reprints, this matched pair of vintage Chinese rubbings is hand-executed on traditional xuan (rice) paper using richly applied black ink, gold gilt, and traditional red artist seals. The tonal depth, fiber texture, and presence of calligraphy reflect the artistry of limited studio production — not mass-market replication.
Each piece was professionally framed using archival materials, moiré matting, and a gold finial in the shape of traditional Chinese fretwork — a detail often missing from modern presentations.
While mass-produced versions without these artisanal qualities are often listed at similar or even higher prices, this pair offers both authenticity and curatorial elegance, appealing to collectors, designers, and those seeking culturally meaningful art.
*Select images have been enlarged to highlight detail and craftsmanship, including close-ups under magnification to showcase hand-applied elements and artist seals.

Artwork and matting are clean and well-preserved. Minor rippling in the handmade paper is consistent with age and material.
