Description of the item:
A wonderful bronze sculpture depicting the face of Alexander the Great in bas-relief, with a circular gold leaf frame, contemporary with the work. The sculpture is signed by the artist "Gemito" and also bears the foundry's stamp, clearly legible with the words "Fonderie Gemito Napoli." The bas-relief can be dated to the late 19th century, and the wonderful patina that covers it, especially on the back, is perfectly in line with our dating. The work is entitled "Alexander the Great," very rare and of the highest artistic quality.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Vincenzo Gemito boasts numerous auction results and our research shows that the four highest results obtained for his sculptures range from over €47,000 to over €101,000, excluding auction fees of 25-30%, just to give an idea of the importance and value of this sculptor's works. We then found our own sculpture, of the same size, with a wooden support, of significantly lower value than a gold leaf frame contemporary to the work, like ours, sold at auction in 2007 by Sotheby's for €5,943 (€7,132 including auction fees). Finally, we found other similar larger medallions depicting the same subject sold for over €3,000 to over €32,000.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, 1852 - 1929) was an Italian sculptor, draftsman, and goldsmith. Largely self-taught and intolerant of academic conventions, Gemito trained himself by drawing inspiration from the alleys of Naples' historic center and the sculptures in the archaeological museum. Gemito's artistic output includes vigorous drawings, terracotta figures, and a large number of sculptures, mainly in bronze, all depicting Neapolitan folk subjects or scenes.
