Standing on on square legs, the top is constructed of two horizontal panels and is plain except for notches on both sides. The sides and back are not carved. Working hinges, keyhole but no key or keeper.
A fine example of the predecessor of the chest of drawers. These
large coffers were used in the 16th and 17th century British Isles to store clothing and valuables. Kept in a bedroom and today often placed at the end of a bed. Wonderfully carved and all original. See less
