Colored Etching “Castore” by artist Jean-Baptiste-Claude-Richard de Saint-Non, complete with frame.Archaeologist, draftsman, engraver (Paris 1727 - therein 1791); abbot, was … Read more Colored Etching “Castore” by artist Jean-Baptiste-Claude-Richard de Saint-Non, complete with frame.Archaeologist, draftsman, engraver (Paris 1727 - therein 1791); abbot, was exiled to Poitiers for his opposition to the bull Unigenitus. He traveled in Holland, England (1750), Italy (1756, 1759-61); in 1778 he visited Paestum. Suggested by the archaeological sites and excavations, he wrote Voyage picturesque, ou des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile (1781-86, published with the collaboration of D. Vivant de Denon). During his Roman stay he protected some young French artists, including H. Robert, J.-H. Fragonard, who provided him with drawings for his collections of engravings (Fragments de peintures \. d'après les maîtres italiens, 1770-73 and Vues de Suisse, 1777-79). He was also a painter.
