This substantial mid-century Murano-attributed sommerso glass catchall features a deep amethyst, blue and black core encased in thick clear glass—a striking example of the sommerso (submerged glass) technique that emerged from Murano in the 1950s–70s.
Although unsigned, several key characteristics support its Murano attribution:
~The sommerso technique, where a richly colored glass layer is encased in clear crystal, was a hallmark of Murano glassmakers such as Seguso Vetri d’Arte, Flavio Poli, and Mandruzzato.
~The organic, weighty form and clear, rounded base reflect the hand-blown artistry typical of Venetian export pieces from the mid-20th century.
~ The presence of tiny seed bubbles and natural swirl marks are consistent with hand-formed glass—not mold-produced work.
~At 3 lbs 10 oz, its heft and clarity suggest high-quality studio glass production.
Perfect as a display bowl, centerpiece, ashtray or decorative catchall.
Condition Note:
There is a small chip along the rim (visible in photos). Structurally sound and displays beautifully, priced accordingly.
