Set of 4 space age ‘kangaroo’ or ‘z- chairs’, designed by german designer ernst moeckl and produced by horn collection … Read more Set of 4 space age ‘kangaroo’ or ‘z- chairs’, designed by german designer ernst moeckl and produced by horn collection in west-germany in the 1970’s. This model was originally produced in fiberglass in the 1960’s at trabant in east germany, as the ddr’s answer to the panton chairs that became very popular at the other end of the iron curtain. This set however was produced on a later date in west-germany for horn collection, using baydur, a very durable polyurethane-duromer developed by bayer, that could be used to mold furniture in any shape. The chairs are all labeled by the maker underneath the seating. The black lacquer shows some serious scratches and using marks, as shown in the pictures. The condition remains decent to good and the chairs are very comfortable and functional. Before 1954, he worked as a technical draughtsman and designer specializing in metallurgy. From 1954 to 1959, he studied product design under max bill at the hochschule für gestaltung (hfg) in ulm. After completing his studies, moeckl opened his own product design studio in stuttgart in 1960.his design portfolio includes a variety of products and furniture, with notable works such as the sbm 680 knock-down armchair (1958), which he co-designed with k.h. Bergmiller at hfg and produced by wilde + spieth;a one-piece plastic side chair/armchair (1971) made by horn; and several camera designs for rollei-werke franke & heidecke.moeckl’s one-piece side chair was showcased in the 1998 exhibition ’68-design und alltagskultur zwischen konsum und konflikt at the kunstmuseum and also featured at the galerie im karmeliterkloster in frankfurt.he passed away in 2013 at the age of 82.
