About the Christofle brand:
Christofle is one of the most important goldsmithing houses on the Parisian scene, creating exceptional tableware, refined jewelry and home accessories of great elegance and mastery since 1830. In 1850, Charles Halphen founded his jewelry workshop in Paris. The metal Alfenide, whose name is clearly a play on words with the name of the founder, was used as a base for the silverware of this factory. It was an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, which was perfect as a base metal due to its silvery shine, in contrast to the brass and copper still common until then (which have a reddish-yellow color).
The Parisian jewelry and silverware manufacturer Christofle begins a collaboration with Halphen, in which Christofle makes the designs, Halphen creates the pieces from his Alfenide, and these are silvered by Christofle and marketed under the name Alfenide. This gave Christofle the opportunity to target a broader market segment, and brought Halphen great success.
After Halphen's death, his widow took over. In 1888, Christofle took over the factory permanently and continued producing cutlery under the Alfenide line until around World War II. Although not well known, these pieces are inextricably linked to the name of Christofle. with its beautiful designs and excellent quality, Alfenide remains a quality brand for luxury tableware. Today they still manufacture pieces following their classic style, without losing the same quality as always.
