This rare, handmade work measures 24 x 120.5 x 12.5 cm and embodies Kingma’s characteristic style: rectangular, linear and three-dimensional. These form principles were an essential starting point in his work and create an architectural, timeless look. Kingma himself called this type of art ‘Wandintarsia’, a technique in which different materials come together harmoniously. The sculpture is made of tropical wood, copper, brass, polished metals, natural stone and pebbles in warm earthy colours, carefully inlaid in cement. The robust materials and the play of relief give the work a powerful brutalist feel. The front of this sculpture is marked with ‘Kingma’, carefully carved into the wood, while the backside reads ‘Paul Kingma 1975’. What makes this work extra special is the original newspaper article on the back, with a photo showing Paul Kingma and Pieter Jiskoot (director of the Gulden Interieur) holding exactly this artwork.
