Printmaker and sculptor Krishna Reddy belonged to a generation of artists who transformed Indian art in the years following the country’s independence. Best known for his intaglio prints, Reddy featured in exhibitions at the Rubin Museum of Art in 2011 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2016. He attended the experimental Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal and later apprenticed with Henry Moore while studying at London’s Slade School of Fine Art. He also studied with Marino Marini at the Brera Academy in Milan. In the early 1950s Reddy joined the Parisian printmaking workshop Atelier 17 and co-developed viscosity printing, an intaglio technique in which color inks of varying thicknesses are layered onto incised, bas-relief-like metal plates. With this method he produced abstract, surrealistic images that often suggested organic matter or cellular structures, as well as posters in support of protest movements in India and France.
A 1969 cast resin sculpture after the original by Krishna Reddy. Titled “The Vision”, a line of people are united together with their hands clasped and in the air.
