Purchased from modern day Zambia in the 1930s, this near pair of Chokwe chief chairs are made from African Blackwood and decorated with ancestral figures in the characteristic position with hands folded across their chests. Unlike most seats in sub-Saharan Arica which are lower stools carved from single blocks of wood, Chokwe chief chairs are high-backed, and were symbols of power and prestige, meant as support for a person of status.
