A grand and rare 18th century French Louis XV period armoire deux corps pantalonnier, handcrafted of solid walnut by master artisans in Lyon, circa 1750s. This impressive piece, with its elegant proportions and bleached walnut patina, exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and artistic traditions for which Lyon was renowned during the 18th century. As one of France’s most important regional centers for fine furniture making, Lyon produced pieces that combined provincial charm with urban sophistication and this pantalonnier is a perfect example.
Similar in function to a linen press but rarer in form and custom made for the noble and wealthier class, this deux corps pantalonnier (literally two-body trouser chest) was designed specifically to store trousers, distinguishing it from typical armoires. The upper section features a molded cornice over a carved frieze, with two paneled doors opening to reveal generous interior storage with three fixed shelves deal for clothing or linens. The lower section consists of two short drawers over one long drawer, each with original hand forged iron hardware. The drawers showcase exquisite Louis XV period carvings of fluted central panels, raised molded frames, and floral and foliate detailing that enhance the visual richness. Most notably, the long drawer features a stunning medallion style central motif with carved scrolls and beading, highlighting the cabinetmaker’s skill and attention to decorative balance. The shaped apron is gracefully carved and rests on short cabriole legs ending in scrolled French toes, a classic Louis XV silhouette. The entire piece is finished in a light, bleached walnut patina, which softens the wood tones and draws attention to the finely carved details while emphasizing the warmth and texture developed over centuries. This exceptional Lyonnaise pantalonnier is not only functional with its ample storage space, but also a statement of timeless elegance, perfect for adding character and French authenticity to both traditional and modern interiors.
