Three stylishly dressed women in hats designed by Camille Roger form a pyramid composition against a backdrop of dark blue. Here, the construction of each hat is merely suggested by a series of lines and areas of flattened color typical of the pochoir method. Woodruff expertly utilized an extremely limited color palette to make each hat pop against the color backdrop behind it. The viewer’s eye may stop at the face of the woman at the bottom left, but it will also continue until it has located (and admired) all three hats in quick succession.
