"Mobilier d'Urgence Type V.150" Cabinet by René Gabriel, France, 1950s
A Historic Design Born from Post-War Innovation
This exceptional cabinet, known as the *Mobilier d'Urgence Type V.150*, was designed by the renowned French designer René Gabriel as part of France’s post-WWII reconstruction efforts. Commissioned for the rebuilding of Le Havre—a city heavily damaged during the war—this piece was part of a government-backed initiative to provide functional, affordable, and beautiful furniture to the public.
Crafted in the 1950s, the V.150 model represents Gabriel's signature style: clean, rational forms that emphasize function without sacrificing elegance. Its utilitarian aesthetic and historical significance make it not only a timeless piece of design, but also a valuable artifact of social and design history.
René Gabriel, a pioneer of modern French design, gained early recognition at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. After the war, he worked alongside Auguste Perret and left a lasting legacy through his work and influence. The prestigious René Gabriel Prize—established in 1951—continues to honor designers who embody his forward-thinking philosophy.
Whether displayed as a statement piece or used functionally in a contemporary space, this cabinet tells a story of resilience, renewal, and the enduring power of thoughtful design.
