This is a fantastic old masters style original oil painting, which has a fascinating history.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has had a program called the "Copyist Program " since 1872. In this program, students can learn from the old masters by copying their work. However, they have to have a permit, and the artwork has the program's identification and permit information stamped on the back.
This painting is of “Man with a Steel Gorget.” (Gorget is a throat armor piece.) The “copyist” student in 1951 was Manes Lichtenberg, who later became known for landscape oil paintings.
Manes Lichtenberg had a "permit" from the MET that allowed him to make this copy of Rembrandt's 17th-century painting (there is currently controversy over whether Rembrandt actually painted this original, but that's another story/rabbit hole).
This painting is stamped multiple times on the back, “Permit to Copy Issued.” It is also signed “Lichtenberg 1/5/51.” The permit was issued shortly after the painting was completed.
Manes Lichtenberg was born in New York City in 1920. His formal training began at the Art Students League in New York and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in France.
Lichtenberg’s unique blend of realism and impressionism has earned him recognition throughout the United States and Europe. He has won many awards, including the Gold Medal of Honor of the Allied Artists of America. In addition, he received the Silver Medal in the International Prix Maurice Utrillo in Paris and the Bronze Medal of the Prix Othon Friesz.
Manes Lichtenberg illustrates life with peacefulness and reserved respectability. He has befittingly earned the approval as a modern-day impressionist through his excellent drawing skills, color, composition, and awareness of light. The artist truly depicts the beauty of life.
