Fritz Nagel was born in Vienna in 1885 and was the son of furniture manufacturer Adolf Nagel. He studied architecture at the School of Arts and Crafts from 1903 to 1906, where he studied under Josef Hoffmann. During his studies, he regularly took part in competitions for the magazine Innendekoration, as did his fellow student Mauritius Herrgesell.
