The Dogon kanaga is one of the most common masks from the Sanga region of Mali, the center of Dogon culture. The kanaga mask is identified by the distinctive crossed bars of its superstructure. Here the artist extended the mask’s form in the decorative joint at the intersection of the face and the superstructure; the set of horns or ears on the head is repeated at the peak of the central post. The pigmentation is also striking, emphasizing the facial features and the superstructure’s crossings. Most Dogon masks are worn at dances in conjunction with rituals that function to honor the deceased and transport their souls into the afterlife.
