Glazed terracotta plate entirely decorated by hand with a bust of a Bedouin wearing a turban portrayed in profile, specifically a nomad from the desert steppes who usually contrasted with the Arabs who lived in cities. The rim features a decorative pattern inspired by the Arabic alphabet, in yellow on a burgundy red background. The rim of the plate is rather rounded and thick. The object is one of many Orientalist-themed works that were in high demand between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, the same period in which the plate was made, and the evident patina, especially on the back, confirms our dating. The plate is unsigned, but in our opinion it can be attributed to the Austrian manufacturer Goldscheider or to any artist who collaborated with this manufacturer, considering that it was one of the most important European manufacturers of Orientalist terracotta. The plate is entirely cold-decorated, so it is just like an oil painting, but instead of being on canvas, it is on terracotta.

Useful information for evaluating the item:
Searching the internet, we found a plate very similar to ours, also made of cold-painted terracotta with an orientalist portrait in the center, larger than ours, offered by the Monique Pastor Art Gallery in Blois, France, for €950. Although not particularly large, our plate features a decoration of great value.

Weight of the plate: 0.465 kg. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
