Item description:
A delightful pair of glazed and vitrified ceramic masks, modeled and decorated entirely by hand, applied to two rather large black glass paste plates in the shape of drops. The pair depicts two children's faces in classic Hungarian folk costumes. The two masks date from between 1931 and 1940 and are made in full Art Deco style. The two objects are unsigned but can easily be attributed to the Hungarian Komlos brothers' workshop.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Our research shows that single full-length ceramics, very similar to our masks, are offered on other online art sales sites for between €250 and €500. We also found a single mask, larger than ours and without a glass plate, valued by an expert at €380-430. Please note that, although smaller, ours are a pair and also feature two wonderful, very thick glass plates, which certainly add value.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Komlós is a Hungarian artistic ceramics company founded in 1931 by brothers Miklós and István Komlós. In 1931, Miklós Komlós and István Komlós opened a small workshop in Nyíregyháza, Hungary, producing sculptural ceramics that quickly became popular throughout the country, alternating between folk and civil scenes and elegant Art Deco and Afro-American themes. They also produced numerous animals and scenes in an expressionist style, with a particular focus on hunting scenes and musicians. In 1934, they opened a second workshop in Budapest's 7th district under the name Fratelli Komlós, quickly becoming famous worldwide for the beauty of their artistic ceramics.
