A graphite and pastel color drawing “Nature Morte” on paper attributed to French artist Amédée Ozenfant (1886-1966). The drawing was discovered in a collector’s estate in US. It is a classic example of his drawings in the still life composition and signed on the lower right. It has not been authenticated and no documentation from the collection could be found, therefore sold as an attribution. It is possible that the collector purchased this in NYC circa 1930s. The buyer should determine the authenticity independently before purchasing it. There appeared to be small repair of a tear line on the back as shown.
The image size is 14" x 10". It is presented in a silver leaf wood frame with gilt trim under museum quality glass.
Amédée Ozenfant was a French cubist painter and writer. Together with Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (Le Corbusier), he was the founder of the Purist movement. Ozenfant and Le Corbusier formulated an aesthetic doctrine born from a criticism of Cubism and called it Purism: where objects are represented as elementary forms devoid of detail. The main concepts were presented in their short essay Après le Cubism (After Cubism) published in 1918. Ozenfant moved to London in 1936 then to New York City in 1938 and opened The Ozenfant School of Fine Arts (in operation from 1939 to 1955).
