A Japanese ceramic Gohon tea bowl (Chawan) with a slightly irregular wall circa 18th century of Meiji Period. Supported by a high notched foot ring that was left unglazed, the chawan has a hand-pinched shape with a large dimple on one side. The glaze features a distinct auberge color mottled with shades of greys and has a slight luster finish.
Originally produced in Korea, Gohon tea bowls were ordered for their use in Japanese tea ceremony. The practice continued in Japan in Hagi and Arashi kilns. This chawan was likely made in one of those kilns in Japan circa 18th century during late Edo Period.
Ex-museum collection of Yale University Art Gallery. There is a small paper label with collection number under the bowl. It comes with a digital copy of the museum card of its provenance and history.
