In Chicle de Sal I, (Salted Chewing Gum), María Magán transforms a crumpled condom into a hyper-realistic oil painting that mimics the appearance of a chewed piece of gum. Framed in matte black and painted with surgical precision, this small-format artwork reimagines the intimate and the discarded as objects of aesthetic contemplation. This chewed condom painting invites viewers to reflect on the visual tension between revulsion and beauty, humor and eroticism. The subtle transparency and folded latex forms create a visual illusion reminiscent of candy or soft sculpture, elevating the everyday into a symbolic act of transformation. Part of the Chicles series, Chicle de Sal I continues Magán’s exploration of pop culture and erotic semiotics. The artist uses oil on canvas to subvert objects typically associated with sexuality, presenting them as playful, almost edible icons. By isolating and reframing these elements, she questions the cultural codes around taste, gender, and aesthetics, all while achieving a painting of striking material elegance and conceptual depth.
