A very fine bronze of the 'Martiniquaise' or 'Woman of Martinique' sculpture after Paul Gauguin.
This bronze was modeled after the 'Woman of Martinique' or 'Femme de la Martinique' held in the Pearlman collection.
It was cast by the Valsuani Foundry in France in the cire perdue (lost wax) techique. It was quite likely cast as a commission by the important 'Galerie Zak' in Paris. (The original model in the Pearlman collection has a Galerie Zak provenance and was sold to Pearlman by 1957.)
It retains a rich dark patina and verdigris the crevices.
With an incised 'no. 1' mark and with a Valsuani cire perdue foundry mark to the side of the plinth.
Overall, simply an amazing work after an original by the incredibly important Post-Impressionist painter and sculptor Paul Gauguin.
Measures: Height ca. 9 1/4 in.
