This is a beautiful large oil painting on canvas depicting a picturesque European coastal town with a bustling waterfront scene. The artist employs a rich, textured impasto technique, using bold, expressive brushstrokes to depict the historic buildings lining the harbor. On the left, a market stall with a red-and-white striped awning adds a lively contrast to the aged stone facades. The scene leads the viewer’s eye towards the calm blue waters, where a traditional sailing boat with deep red sails drifts, reflecting beautifully in the shimmering sea.
Presented in a hand-decorated frame.
Signed in a lower-right by Friedrich Karl Thauer.
Dimensions: 44.5" x 24.5" framed, painting measures 40" x 20".
Good condition. Please see the photos, photos are part of the description.
Friedrich Karl Thauer (Germany,1924-2009) came from a family of artists with a long tradition. His father Heinrich Thauer was a master student under Roth. He designed the fresco “St. Benno with the Munich Child” at the Old Town Hall in Munich, as well as the three mosaic domes in Munich’s North Cemetery.
Friedrich Karl Thauer studied with the painter and restorer Franz Haggenmiller, among others, and with Motz in Munich. Oskar Kokoschka, with whom he studied at the International Academy in Salzburg, Austria, also had a decisive influence on his figurative representations. F. K. Thauer’s collective exhibitions were in Switzerland, where he had great success in the “Am Pfauen” gallery in Zurich.
In 1946, at the age of 21, he exhibited alongside Gabriele Münter and other members of the Kandinsky circle in Murnau, with Münter recognizing his exceptional talent. By 1963, Thauer had established a second studio in Arco, Italy, and was honored with the title "Cavaliere stella al merito artistico" for his contributions to art. His works, deeply rooted in the tradition of the Munich School and Impressionism, have been featured in numerous exhibitions across Switzerland and have appeared in over 190 public auctions.
Thauer's paintings often depict serene landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes, characterized by their impressionistic style and vibrant color palettes. His ability to capture the essence of natural and urban environments has made his work highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts.
