This traditional, handcrafted cabinet is raised on straight legs and was assembled with tenon and mortise joinery.

The decorative spandrels feature elegantly carved intertwining flowers in low relief. The Chinese people believe that flowers, which are recurring themes in Chinese art, poetry and literature, convey positive messages. The hardware features traditional c-scroll pulls with full moon backplates, which is also significant in Chinese culture. The full moon is a symbol of peace, prosperity and family reunion.

The scale of this massive 19th century cabinet suggests it was originally used as a family altar. The drawers would have housed incense, candles and other offerings to family ancestors and the lower storage compartment used for textiles, clothing and other household items.
