This piece is a wonderful example of features that make Chinese furniture so highly desired: beautiful, graceful and clean design, eminent functionality and sturdy construction.

The upper section has four swing doors; the middle doors open away from the center and the outer doors open towards the center. In the lower section, the two screen doors slide horizontally. The doors are paneled and adorned with beautifully pierced fretwork in traditional geometric patterns. The mid-section has three drawers brass pulls. The pulls on the drawers and upper doors are pear-shaped, which in Chinese culture symbolizes fortune and prosperity.

The structure of this Chinese cabinet, which is consistent with traditional handcrafted furniture, confirms its authenticity: the four easily removable upper doors are supported by wooden pin hinges; and the cabinet is assembled with tenon and mortise joinery that requires no glue, nails or other mechanical joining device.

Traditionally, the main section was used for bowls, woks and cooking utensils, the drawers for knives, choppers and chopsticks, and lower compartment for fresh fruits and vegetables and live chickens. The sides of the upper and lower compartments are slatted for air circulation.

The cabinet's legs are slightly splayed, giving it a tapered A-frame silhouette that creates the impression of upward movement. The cabinet’s rectilinear silhouette is accentuated with carved front and side aprons and finished in a rich reddish brown stain. This solid piece has been well-maintained and has beautifully-aged patina. It would make a stunning statement in a large reception or living area or serve as a functional bar. The bottom compartment is perfect for wine storage, the upper compartment for spirits and glasses, and the drawers for bar accoutrements.
