Made with handwoven wool and originating from Turkey circa 1950-1960, this 9x22 vintage kilim features a design that looks most similar to Tekke Turkmen rugs and flatweaves and similar nomadic provenances—an absolutely one-of-a-kind interpretation of this style for its size and origins, among the most exciting new and rare, collectible curations from Rug & Kilim.
On the Design:
This vintage Tekke Turkmen-style carpet exemplifies one of the most iconic and archetypal tribal designs from Central Asia—often referred to as a "main carpet," indicating it was created for personal or ceremonial use, rather than for trade. The design features a repeated allover gul (octagonal medallion) pattern in alternating colors of crimson, black, and navy, laid out within a precise grid structure. Each gul is a tribal signature, often used by nomadic groups to denote clan affiliation or geographic origin. The alternating diamond motifs and lattice-style field design create a rhythmic, almost architectural visual appeal that feels deeply personal. Its colors are exemplary of the quintessential, rich reds and blues admirers of our craft will know of this provenance, with punctuations of chocolate brown and off-white the keen eye will further note.
The field is enclosed by multiple minor borders filled with stylized flower or ashik motifs, enhancing its visual framing without disrupting the repetition in the field. These kilims are not only decorative but are embedded with cultural narrative—each symbol and repetition representing continuity, protection, and identity. Today, Tekke main carpets are highly desirable for their balance of form and folklore, combining historical substance with minimalist design language that translates well into contemporary interiors.
