On the Design:

This modern Bessarabian flatweave takes visual cues from its 19th-century Neoclassical-revivalist counterparts, known for balancing Eastern European weaving traditions with the floral grandeur of French Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets. Woven primarily in Romania, Moldova and southwestern Ukraine, Bessarabian rugs historically emerged at the intersection of the Ottoman Empire and Russian imperial influence. This created a visual design that was neither fully Oriental nor entirely Western—making these rugs uniquely cosmopolitan. This rug features a symmetrical trellis of dark medallions filled with soft florals—roses, vines, and curling leaves—framed by a complementary pale field and scrolling botanical border.

Modern Bessarabian interpretations like this one retain the flatweave technique, which offers a more subdued texture, ideal for both classical and modern interiors. What distinguishes this piece is the juxtaposition of restraint and ornament: the use of gentle greens, blushes, and charcoals creates a faded, almost watercolor effect—deliberately evoking age and elegance.
