Between romania & ukraine
produced in the moldovan and lithuanian countryside, the series “between romania & ukraine” takes place in a post-communist context. Through a poetic approach, samuel lugassy captures the reality of rural populations – often made up of children and the elderly – left to their own devices while active generations have left the villages to look for work in the city.
this series, imbued with humanity and delicacy, is today presented in support of the ukrainian war effort.

about the artist
samuel lugassy was born in cannes. After studying literature and economics, he began his career as a photographer in the early 2000s. He started out as an assistant to fashion photographers in major parisian studios, before specializing in portraiture, both for the press and advertising and in his personal projects.
a quest for identity
samuel lugassy's personal work explores the question of identity. He seeks to reveal the inner being of his subjects through their appearance and the way in which they are perceived by the outside gaze.

his photographs have been published in prestigious titles such as der spiegel, les cahiers du cinéma, figaro magazine, afrique magazine and le magazine littéraire. Exhibited mainly in france, he notably received the sportfolio festival prize in narbonne for his gymnast & wrestler series.
