Original clay sculpture by Edgardo Simone (1890-1948).
17.5" wide; 19" tall; 8.5" deep.

This stunning vintage terra cotta clay sculpture by renowned Italian-American artist Edgardo Simone (1890–1948) depicts a majestic nude woman seated and looking out, her elbow resting on an urn. Her hair and the cloth draped over her body reveal Simone's talent and attention to detail, while intentional "damage" elicits, as Percy Bysshe Shelley described, the inevitable decay of power and the impermanence of human achievements.
This sculpture is signed in-mold to the base. The artist also signed "ORIGINAL," to the side of the base. This is a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece by this prolific sculptor.
Simone trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and later moved to California, where he began working as a set designer for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studios. He is also known for his public sculptures, including the Monument of the Sacred Heart in Naples, Italy, the Statue of Saint Francis of Assisi in Nocera Superiore, and the Statue of the Madonna in the Cathedral of Verona.
