As a painter, I was delighted to have the opportunity to capture the beauty of a late local artist's home in plein air.
This painting depicts the Hortense Miller House, which belonged to a remarkable woman ahead of her time. Hortense Miller was a teacher, author, gardener, artist, and avid reader, as well as a lifelong learner and astute observer of nature. She was also an early feminist. In 1973, she generously donated her home and property to the City of Laguna Beach. To maintain the property, the Friends of Hortense Miller was established. Later on, in 1977, the Friends of the Hortense Miller Garden, Inc. was formed to assist in caring for both the home and garden.
“Plants are better than animals; animals are better than people; and women are as good as men.” - Hortense Miller
