Fabulous Blue Delft ceramic or majolica tile dating back to around 1700, entirely hand-decorated with classic blue designs on a white background. Beautiful antique patina covering the entire piece, perfectly in line with our dating. The tile depicts St. Francis preaching to two women seated on a staircase in front of him, surrounded by a rural landscape.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our research shows that similar Blue Delft tiles from the 1700s are offered by other online sellers at a minimum of €100-120 for the smaller ones with simpler, single-subject decorations, up to around €600-1,000 for the older and more important ones with very rich and complex decorations. We also found one from the 1600s on Pamono with a portrait of Amalia Van Solms priced at €3,600.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Delftware or Delft majolica is a famous handicraft product from the Netherlands, particularly from the city of Delft. The term Delftware has come to refer to all Dutch ceramic production. This pottery was exported all over the world and its origins date back to the end of the 16th century. The product, one of the leading types in Europe between 1600 and 1800, is usually characterized by blue decorations and is therefore also known as "Delft blue" (in Dutch: Delfts blauw). One of the leading Dutch ceramists, particularly in the Art Nouveau style, was TAC Colenbrander (1841-1930). Today, only one of the original factories survives in Delft, "De Porceleyne Fles," which is still in operation.
