Designed at the time for an exhibition in Amsterdam. The painting shows Artemisa she lived in the 3rd Century BC. and was married to her brother, King Mausolus. After his dead she was offered a cup in the scape a shell which contained a brew with his ashes. In testimony of her union Artemisia drank it up. She made Mausolus grave into a monument. The word 'Mausoleum' stems from this story. Because Rembrandt painted this work in the same year he got married. It is assumed that the wanted symbolize marital fidelity with it.
